TATA-box binding protein-associated factor RNA polymerase I subunit A (TAF1A) is a protein component of the SL1 transcription factor complex, which is essential for RNA polymerase I-mediated transcription initiation of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. TAF1A helps assemble the pre-initiation complex at rDNA promoters, stabilizes UBTF binding, and channels regulatory signals for rRNA synthesis, a central process for ribosome assembly and cellular protein synthesis. SL1, containing TBP and several TAFs including TAF1A, specifically positions RNA polymerase I at rDNA promoters for accurate initiation of transcription. Defective TAF1A function can impair ribosome production and has been associated with cardiac diseases.
