Overview

TATA box-binding protein-associated factor RNA polymerase I subunit C (TAF1C) is a core component of the SL1 complex, which is essential for the initiation of transcription by RNA polymerase I. TAF1C, the largest SL1-specific TBP-associated factor, interacts with the TATA-binding protein (TBP) and with other TAFs to form the SL1 complex, which binds to the core promoter of ribosomal RNA genes, thereby positioning RNA polymerase I correctly for transcription initiation. This process is critical for ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis, a fundamental step for ribosome biogenesis and cellular protein synthesis. TAF1C also aids in stabilizing nucleolar transcription factor UBTF on rDNA and facilitates the recruitment of RNA polymerase I via specific protein interactions. Disruption of TAF1C function is implicated in diseases involving impaired ribosome biogenesis or cell growth, such as cancer and certain developmental disorders[1][2][3][4][6][8].
