Overview

Taurine is a simple, sulfur-containing amino acid derivative (chemical name: 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) that is among the most abundant amino acids in animal tissues[2][3][5]. Unlike most amino acids, taurine is not incorporated into proteins but is vital for many physiological processes including bile salt formation, modulation of intracellular calcium, osmoregulation, antioxidation, and central nervous system function. It is a conditionally essential nutrient, especially important for the developing fetus and neonate where endogenous synthesis may be insufficient. Taurine deficiency has been linked to neurodevelopmental delay, retinal degeneration, and other pathologies, particularly in populations at risk such as preterm infants or individuals on strict vegetarian diets[5]. It does not function as a protein-based therapeutic target but is sometimes supplemented in medical nutrition and studied for potential benefits in a range of clinical conditions. Key point: “Taurine” is not a canonical “target” (receptor/enzyme/etc.), but a small molecule with diverse physiological roles.
