TBX3 antisense RNA 1 (TBX3-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the protein-coding gene TBX3. As an lncRNA, TBX3-AS1 does not encode a protein but acts as a regulator of gene expression. TBX3-AS1 has been implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion, particularly in the context of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It has been shown to act as a tumor suppressor, and its overexpression leads to inhibition of the PI3K/AKT pathway, thereby reducing aggressive tumor cell phenotypes. The molecular mechanisms of TBX3-AS1 are under active investigation, and while it appears to modulate cancer cell behavior, direct therapeutic agents targeting it are not yet available. Its role as a biomarker and potential therapeutic target is of increasing interest, particularly in oncology research. TBX3 antisense RNA 1 (TBX3-AS1) is a validated long non-coding RNA, emerging as a gene expression regulator and a putative tumor suppressor in some cancers, most notably NSCLC. It is not a conventional receptor, enzyme, or ion channel, but fits in the lncRNA/antisense RNA class. There are no known drug interactors as of the current literature, but its biological and clinical significance remains an active area of research.
As a nucleic acid, potential therapeutic strategies would involve antisense oligonucleotides, RNA interference (RNAi), or modulation of lncRNA expression. In NSCLC, overexpression of TBX3-AS1 inhibits PI3K/AKT signaling, leading to reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis.
