The molecule "TCF4 pre-mRNA" refers to the precursor messenger RNA transcribed from the TCF4 gene, which encodes Transcription factor 4 (TCF4). However, the established therapeutic or biological target is the TCF4 protein, not its pre-mRNA. Pre-mRNA itself is not recognized as a standard therapeutic target, though modulation of its splicing or expression may have indirect therapeutic implications, such as in genetic disorders. Transcription factor 4 is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor encoded by the TCF4 gene on human chromosome 18q21.2. It is integral to gene regulation in neurodevelopment and cell differentiation, binding DNA at E-box sites to control transcription. Mutations in the TCF4 gene cause Pitt-Hopkins syndrome and are associated with Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy, schizophrenia, and a range of neurodevelopmental disorders due to its broad action in the central and peripheral nervous system. The gene’s alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms, and trinucleotide repeat expansion in its introns disrupts normal mRNA processing and leads to disease phenotypes.
