Overview

The tear film air-liquid interface is the outermost boundary of the multi-layered tear film that covers the ocular surface. The tear film consists of a superficial lipid layer (including polar and non-polar lipids from the meibomian glands) and a bulk aqueous/mucin layer from the lacrimal gland, with specialized mucins from goblet cells. The air-liquid interface at the surface of the tear film acts as a barrier between the tear film and the external environment, providing lubrication, optical clarity, and protection against evaporation, pathogens, and physical damage. Dysfunction of the tear film at this interface is involved in dry eye disease and ocular surface disorders, but the interface itself is not a molecular therapeutic target nor a single molecular entity.
