Overview

The tear film aqueous layer is the central, watery component of the precorneal tear film that covers the ocular surface. It plays a critical role in maintaining eye health, comfort, and clear vision by providing lubrication, supplying nutrients to avascular corneal tissues, flushing away debris and microorganisms, and supporting antimicrobial defense. Deficiency or dysfunction in this layer leads to dry eye disease symptoms.
