Mechanism of action

Osmoprotectants enter ocular surface epithelial cells via transporters, balancing intracellular osmolality without disrupting normal cellular metabolism. They reduce water loss from the tear film by increasing viscosity or forming protective layers on the ocular surface. Examples include glycerol acting as a humectant to retain moisture and stabilize cell membranes against shrinkage due to high osmolarity, and trehalose preserving corneal/conjunctival cell viability during desiccation by delaying water evaporation from the tear film.
