Overview

"Tear Quality" is not a molecule, receptor, or canonical therapeutic target. Instead, it refers to the overall composition and functional integrity of the tear film produced primarily by the lacrimal gland and associated accessory glands. The tear film is a complex mixture of water, ions (such as sodium, potassium, chloride), proteins (including lactoferrin, lysozyme, immunoglobulin A), lipids from meibomian glands, and mucins from goblet cells[1][2][5]. Its main functions are lubricating the ocular surface; protecting against pathogens through antimicrobial proteins; providing nutrients to avascular tissues like the cornea; flushing out debris; and maintaining optical clarity for vision[1][2][5]. Disruption in tear quality can lead to dry eye symptoms or excessive tearing but does not represent a single molecular entity that can be directly targeted by drugs[3][5]. Therefore, "Tear Quality" should not be classified as a molecular target such as an enzyme or receptor.
