This target refers to the mechanism of tear retention enhancement achieved through the in-situ gel formation of hydroxypropyl guar (HP-guar) cross-linked with borate ions. Upon instillation, HP-guar interacts with borate ions present in the formulation and tear film, forming a viscoelastic hydrogel matrix. This matrix prolongs the retention of lubricants and demulcents on the ocular surface, mimicking the natural mucin layer and providing sustained hydration and protection for epithelial cells in dry eye conditions.
