A technetium-99m generator is a device used primarily in nuclear medicine to produce technetium-99m (Tc-99m), a metastable radioactive isotope widely used in diagnostic imaging procedures. The generator contains molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), which decays with a 66-hour half-life to Tc-99m; the Tc-99m is then “eluted” (washed out) using saline to provide a sterile solution of sodium pertechnetate (TcO₄⁻) for preparation of various radiopharmaceuticals[1][6][9]. Generators are delivered to hospitals or radiopharmacies due to Tc-99m’s short half-life (6 hours), allowing on-site, on-demand production. Tc-99m obtained this way is used in over 40 million diagnostic procedures annually, including bone scans, cardiac imaging, thyroid imaging, and more, due to its ideal gamma-ray emission characteristics[5][4][6][7]. The generator itself is not therapeutic but is critical for producing clinically vital imaging agents.
