Overview

Technetium-99m-labeled radiopharmaceuticals are compounds consisting of a pharmaceutical carrier molecule labeled with the metastable radioisotope technetium-99m (Tc-99m), which emits gamma photons upon decay. After administration, the carrier targets specific tissues or organs based on its biochemical properties. Medical imaging equipment, such as a gamma camera or SPECT scanner, detects the gamma photon emissions following tissue uptake, allowing for visualization of organ function, blood flow, tumor localization, and many other diagnostic indications. Tc-99m is the most commonly used radioisotope in nuclear medicine imaging due to its ideal physical properties (short half-life, pure gamma emission, minimal beta emission, suitable energy, and versatile chemistry), making it safe and effective for patient diagnosis across diverse clinical scenarios[1][2][3][5][9].
