Overview
The tegument is the specialized outer body covering of tapeworms (Class Cestoda). It's a syncytial structure crucial for nutrient absorption, protection against host defenses, waste excretion, and immune evasion. Its complex molecular composition and role in host-parasite interactions make it a promising target for novel antiparasitic drugs. The tegument consists of a distal cytoplasm with microtriches for increased surface area, a proximal cytoplasm containing organelles, and a basal lamina separating it from muscle layers.
