Overview

Tektin-1 is a filament-forming microtubule-associated protein, encoded by the TEKT1 gene, and is a member of the tektin family[1][5][3][7]. Tektins are characterized by a conserved α-helical coiled-coil structure that helps stabilize the walls of ciliary and flagellar microtubules, working in close association with tubulins[1][2]. Tektin-1 is predominantly expressed in the testis and is thought to be important for the structure and function of sperm flagella, thus playing an essential role in spermatogenesis[3][5]. Tektin polymers contribute to the mechanical stability and assembly of cilia and flagella, regulating their length and architecture[1][2]. TEKT1 is not classified as an enzyme, transporter, receptor, or transcription factor; it is considered a structural microtubule-associated protein. As of current knowledge, no drugs target Tektin-1, and no biomarker or safety concern profiles are established for it in clinical settings[5][7]. Defects or dysfunctions in TEKT1 may contribute to specific motility disorders or rare inherited diseases affecting cilia or flagella[5][3].
