Tektin-5 (TEKT5) is a member of the tektin family of proteins that serve as microtubule inner proteins (MIPs) and are structural components of the flagellar axoneme, where they help stabilize and reinforce the microtubule doublets that form the core of motile cilia and flagella. TEKT5 is predominantly expressed in testis (and at lower levels in brain), localizing specifically to the sperm tail, where it is enriched in the accessory flagellar structures (midpiece and principal piece), supporting sperm motility and integrity. Mutations or altered expression of tektins, including TEKT5, are associated with impaired sperm motility and male infertility. TEKT5 is not currently recognized as a therapeutic target, nor are there any drugs known to interact with it[1][2][3][4][5].
