Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Catalytic Subunit (hTERT)

Target
hTERT
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Reverse Transcriptase, Ribonucleoprotein
01

Overview

The human telomerase reverse transcriptase catalytic subunit (hTERT) is a multi-functional enzyme essential for cellular immortality mechanisms through both canonical (telomere extension) and noncanonical pathways—including mitochondrial protection—and serves as a prominent target antigen for cancer immunotherapy strategies involving helper epitopes derived from this protein. It maintains telomere length, preventing chromosomal degradation during cell division, and plays roles in stem cell maintenance, RNA polymerization, and mitochondrial protection. Deregulation of TERT is implicated in oncogenesis, making it a target for cancer therapy. Mutations can lead to genetic disorders.
