Telomere structure refers to the specialized DNA-protein architecture found at the ends of linear eukaryotic chromosomes. Telomeres consist of repetitive DNA sequences (TTAGGG in humans) and a protein complex called shelterin, which protects chromosomal ends from degradation, inappropriate DNA repair, and fusion with other chromosomes[7][1]. Telomere structures are critical for chromosomal stability, cell replicative potential, and prevention of cellular senescence or apoptosis due to loss of genetic material during successive cell divisions[9][4]. While telomere length and maintenance (regulated by enzyme telomerase and associated proteins) are therapeutic targets in cancer and aging, the structure itself is not a druggable molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme, but rather a functional chromosomal feature essential for genome integrity[2][3].
