Testis cells represent the functional units of the male reproductive system, comprising germ cells, Sertoli cells, and Leydig cells (StatPearls, Anatomy, Abdomen and Pelvis, Testicle, 2023). These cells are responsible for the dual roles of the testes: producing spermatozoa through spermatogenesis and synthesizing steroid hormones, most notably testosterone (NIH, Spermatogenesis, 2022). Although 'testis cells' is a histological designation rather than a specific molecular target, the individual cell types contain numerous receptors and enzymes that serve as targets for clinical intervention. For instance, Leydig cells express the luteinizing hormone receptor (LHCGR), which is targeted by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to stimulate testosterone production (PubChem, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, 2024). Conversely, Sertoli cells are regulated by follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to support sperm development. Dysfunctions in these cell populations are central to the etiology of male infertility, hypogonadism, and testicular malignancies (PubMed, Testicular Cancer and Infertility, 2021).
Pharmacological agents interact with specific molecular targets within testis cells, such as G protein-coupled receptors (LHCGR, FSHR) or nuclear receptors (Androgen Receptor), to stimulate or inhibit physiological processes like sperm production and testosterone secretion (StatPearls, Physiology, Testosterone, 2023; PubChem, Follitropin alfa, 2024).
