Overview

Testis-expressed protein 13D (TEX13D) is a member of the TEX13 family, a group of proteins expressed almost exclusively in the male germ cells of mammals. TEX13D is predicted to act as a transcriptional cofactor and repressor, possibly via its zinc finger domain, and has developmentally regulated testis-specific expression. Unlike other family members, there is no evidence of TEX13D being essential for male fertility (mouse knockouts have normal fertility). Rare genetic variants in TEX13D have been observed in association with certain forms of spermatogenic failure, but its role as a disease gene remains uncertain due to lack of linked causality in validation studies. The protein's key features are mRNA binding, transcriptional repression, and nuclear localization in mature sperm. No drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns are reported related to TEX13D, and it is not considered a therapeutic target in current medicine or pharmacology.
