Testis-expressed protein 19 (TEX19) is a mammalian-specific protein encoded by the TEX19 gene, highly expressed in the testis and placenta. TEX19 is required during spermatogenesis and placental development, where it collaborates with the Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) pathway to repress retrotransposable elements and prevent their mobilization. This protein binds directly to piRNAs and interacts with Piwi proteins, safeguarding the genome integrity in germ cells and during early development. Deficiency in TEX19 disrupts normal gametogenesis and may be linked to cancer progression, such as ovarian carcinoma, making it a potential therapeutic target for specific malignancies and reproductive health research[1][5][6].
