Overview

Testis-expressed protein 55 (TEX55) is a protein encoded by the C3orf30 gene located on chromosome 3 (3q13.32) in humans[1][3][7]. The protein is predominantly produced in the testis and is believed to act as an anchoring protein for cAMP-dependent type II protein kinase (putative A-kinase anchoring protein/AKAP)[1][2]. It is highly conserved among mammals and its expression correlates with spermatogenic activity. Reduced TEX55 expression is observed in certain forms of male infertility such as cryptorchidism, Sertoli-cell-only syndrome, and teratozoospermia[1][2]. Despite its testis-specific expression and putative involvement in spermatogenesis, gene knockout studies in mice indicate that TEX55 is dispensable for male fertility, possibly due to functional redundancy with other proteins[2]. TEX55 is not associated with any approved drugs or recognized as a clinical therapeutic target[3][6][7]. Its most significant clinical relevance lies in its potential utility as a biomarker for assessing testicular function and male infertility[1][2][7].
