Testis-specific chromodomain protein Y 1 (CDY1) is a chromatin-associated nuclear protein that contains a chromodomain and a histone acetyltransferase catalytic domain, with specificity for acetylating histone H4. CDY1 is primarily expressed during the late stages of spermatid development and is thought to facilitate the exchange of histones for protamines during sperm chromatin remodeling. Disruption or deletion of CDY1 has been associated with impaired spermatogenesis and certain cases of male infertility. CDY1 is encoded on the human Y chromosome, typically found in two nearly identical copies within palindromic regions, and is considered a component of heterochromatin-like complexes with gene repressor functions[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
