Testosterone synthesis is the complex biochemical pathway by which the steroid hormone testosterone is produced, primarily in the Leydig cells of the testes in males, with smaller amounts synthesized in the ovaries of females and adrenal glands of both sexes. It begins with cholesterol as a precursor and involves several key enzymes including CYP11A1, CYP17A1, 3β-HSD, and 17β-HSD3. The process is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.
