Circulating anti-tetanus antibodies are protective immunoglobulins, predominantly of the IgG isotype, that are generated by the immune system following exposure to the tetanus toxoid or the bacterium Clostridium tetani (CDC, 2021). Their primary function is to neutralize tetanospasmin, a potent neurotoxin that causes the muscle spasms and autonomic instability characteristic of tetanus (StatPearls, 2023). These antibodies work by binding to the toxin in the bloodstream and extracellular fluid, preventing it from attaching to the presynaptic membranes of motor neurons and undergoing retrograde transport to the central nervous system (PubMed, 2022). In clinical settings, the concentration of these antibodies is used as a biomarker to determine an individual's immune status, with a level of 0.1 IU/mL generally accepted as the minimum protective threshold (WHO, 2018). While they are naturally produced via active immunization, they can also be administered as a drug (Tetanus Immune Globulin) to provide immediate passive immunity in high-risk scenarios (NIH, 2023).
Neutralization of tetanospasmin (tetanus toxin) by binding to the toxin's heavy chain, which prevents its attachment to neuronal gangliosides and subsequent internalization into the nervous system (StatPearls, 2023).
