Clostridium tetani neurotoxin (TeNT), also known as tetanus toxin, is a potent neurotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani. It causes tetanus by inhibiting neurotransmitter release from inhibitory interneurons in the central nervous system, leading to spastic paralysis.
The light chain cleaves synaptobrevin/VAMP2, blocking neurotransmitter release from inhibitory interneurons, leading to unopposed muscle contraction and spastic paralysis.
