Tetanus Toxoid Protein (TT)

Target
TT
Molecular classification
Toxoid, Vaccine antigen, Carrier protein
01

Overview

Tetanus toxoid protein is an inactivated (toxoided) form of the tetanus toxin, used primarily as a vaccine antigen and as a carrier protein in conjugate vaccines. The toxoid is produced by treating the native tetanus toxin with formaldehyde, rendering it non-toxic while retaining its strong immunogenic properties. It induces robust antibody responses that neutralize circulating toxin upon exposure. TT is widely used as a carrier protein for polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccines (e.g., Hib-TT) enhancing immune responses against otherwise poorly immunogenic antigens. Each manufacturer uses proprietary methods for detoxification and purification; thus TT preparations are not uniform across sources. Aggregation can occur with age or improper storage.
