Target intelligence / Profile preview
Tetanus toxoid-specific B-cell receptors (BCRs) and T-cell receptors (TCRs) are specialized surface proteins on lymphocytes responsible for recognizing the inactivated toxin of Clostridium tetani (StatPearls, 2023). These receptors play a critical role in the adaptive immune system by identifying the tetanus toxoid antigen presented during vaccination or infection (CDC, 2022). When these receptors bind to their specific epitopes, they initiate a cascade of cellular events including B-cell maturation into antibody-secreting plasma cells and T-cell activation for cytokine production and help (PubMed, PMID: 24610398). This process is the fundamental mechanism behind the efficacy of tetanus vaccines, which aim to generate long-lived memory B and T cells that can rapidly respond to future exposures (WHO, 2017). Because of the widespread use of tetanus vaccination, these receptors are also extensively utilized in clinical research as a benchmark for assessing human immune competence and the dynamics of immunological memory (PubMed, PMID: 31434705). The interaction between the toxoid and these receptors is essential for preventing the neuromuscular symptoms of tetanus, such as muscle spasms and respiratory failure (NIH, 2023).
Antigen-specific binding to B-cell and T-cell receptors triggers clonal expansion and differentiation of lymphocytes into effector and memory cells.
