Tetraspanin-13 is a cell-surface protein encoded by the TSPAN13 gene in humans and is part of the tetraspanin (transmembrane 4 superfamily) family, characterized by four transmembrane domains[1][4][6][7]. Tetraspanins function as organizers of membrane microdomains and mediate signal transduction, playing key roles in cell development, activation, growth, and motility[1][2][4]. Tetraspanin-13 has been shown to specifically interact with and regulate the function of N-type voltage-gated calcium channel CaV2.2 in neuronal tissues, modulating channel activation and inactivation, which suggests a putative role in neurotransmitter release regulation[3][5]. In addition, Tetraspanin-13 has been implicated in cancer progression, with altered levels correlated to aggressive cancer phenotypes and evidence that its knockdown promotes apoptosis and reduces proliferation in cancer cell lines[1].
