Sm-TSP-2
Molecular classification
Tetraspanin family protein, Integral membrane protein, Other
01

Overview

Tetraspanin-2 protein (Sm-TSP-2) is an integral membrane protein found on the tegument (outer surface membrane) of the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, which causes schistosomiasis in humans[1][2][3]. Sm-TSP-2 is a member of the tetraspanin protein family, involved in organizing membrane microdomains (TEMs) by acting as scaffolds for multi-protein complexes that maintain membrane integrity and facilitate immune evasion[1][2]. Due to its surface exposure and essential function in parasite survival, Sm-TSP-2 is considered one of the best candidate antigens for vaccine development against schistosomiasis, having shown promise in experimental models[2][3]. It does not have known direct small molecule drugs but is being researched extensively as a vaccine component and potential antibody target[1][2].
