Overview

THAP domain-containing protein 3 (THAP3) is a protein in humans encoded by the THAP3 gene. The defining THAP domain is a zinc-dependent, sequence-specific DNA-binding motif of the C2CH-type zinc finger superfamily, typically located at the N-terminus. THAP3 is structurally similar to other family members (such as THAP1), predicted to participate in DNA binding and regulate transcription by RNA polymerase II through complex formation with other nuclear factors (THAP1/THAP3-HCFC1-OGT complex). Although the detailed cellular function of THAP3 remains incompletely characterized, the broader THAP protein family is implicated in cell proliferation, apoptosis, chromosome segregation, chromatin modification, and gene expression regulation. Disease associations include chromosomal abnormalities and neurological disorders, but direct mechanistic links for THAP3 have not been fully elucidated.
