Overview

Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is an essential water-soluble vitamin that acts as a cofactor for key enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism, including pyruvate dehydrogenase and transketolase. It is necessary for energy production, nervous system function, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Deficiency leads to serious syndromes, including beriberi and Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome, with symptoms affecting the cardiovascular and neurological systems. Thiamine is not a protein, enzyme, receptor, or transporter, but a small molecule vital for cellular function. It is used therapeutically to treat or prevent deficiency syndromes and is found in food, supplements, and pharmaceutical preparations[2][4][5][6].
