Thioredoxin reductase (TXNRD, also known as TrxR) is a key enzyme in cellular redox regulation. It catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of thioredoxin (Trx), which in turn reduces disulfide bonds in various substrate proteins, maintaining the intracellular redox environment and protecting cells from oxidative stress. TXNRD is a member of the pyridine nucleotide–disulfide oxidoreductase family and functions as a homodimeric flavoprotein. Overexpression or dysregulation is implicated in cancer progression and resistance mechanisms. Inhibition sensitizes cells—especially cancer cells—to oxidative damage-induced death.
