THOC3 antisense RNA 1 (THOC3-AS1) is a human long non-coding antisense RNA gene located in the genome such that it overlaps with or is proximal to the protein-coding THOC3 gene. Antisense RNAs like THOC3-AS1 are typically involved in regulating the expression of their sense partner (here, THOC3) via transcriptional interference, epigenetic modification, or RNA-RNA interactions. THOC3-AS1 is transcribed but does not encode a protein; it may contribute to post-transcriptional regulation or chromatin state of the region, similar to other lncRNA/antisense RNAs. There is currently no specific evidence that THOC3-AS1 itself is a therapeutic target or biomarker in human disease; its biological function is presumed to be gene regulation.
