Overview

The thoracic spinal nerves are a set of 12 paired nerves (T1–T12) that emerge from the thoracic segment of the spinal cord. Each nerve exits the spinal column through an intervertebral foramen corresponding to its vertebral level and quickly splits into dorsal (posterior) and ventral (anterior) rami. The ventral rami of T1–T11 become intercostal nerves that travel between the ribs, innervating the chest wall and helping control breathing; the ventral ramus of T12 becomes the subcostal nerve. The dorsal rami supply the muscles and skin of the back.
