The thoracic sympathetic nerves refer to a group of autonomic nerve fibers originating from the thoracic segments (T1–T12) of the spinal cord, forming the thoracic portion of the sympathetic trunk and sending branches such as the greater, lesser, and least thoracic splanchnic nerves. These nerves consist of preganglionic fibers that synapse in paravertebral ganglia or pass through to prevertebral ganglia, ultimately modulating autonomic (involuntary) activity in thoracic and abdominal organs such as the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and digestive tract. They function via neurotransmitter release (primarily norepinephrine and epinephrine) at effector sites and are fundamentally anatomical, not molecular entities[1][2][7][9].
