Thrombomodulin

Thrombomodulin is a cell surface-expressed glycoprotein primarily synthesized by vascular endothelial cells. It plays a central role in the regulation of coagulation, inflammation, fibrinolysis, and cellular proliferation. It acts as a critical cofactor for thrombin-mediated activation of protein C, shifting thrombin’s substrate specificity from procoagulant to anticoagulant activities. By modulating both coagulation and inflammatory responses, TM helps control inflammation at sites of vascular injury or infection.

Thrombomodulin binds thrombin, altering its substrate specificity and promoting protein C activation, leading to anticoagulation and reduced inflammation.
