Thrombospondin-related adhesion protein (TRAP) is a transmembrane protein found in Plasmodium species, the parasites responsible for malaria. TRAP plays a critical role in the parasite's life cycle, particularly during the invasion of host liver cells by sporozoites. It facilitates sporozoite gliding motility, hepatocyte invasion, and establishment of infection in vertebrate hosts. The extracellular domain of TRAP consists of an A-domain, a TSP repeat motif, and a proline-rich segment, mediating adhesive interactions with host cells. As a pre-erythrocytic antigen, TRAP has been investigated as a malaria vaccine candidate.
