Overview

Thrombosis is the pathological formation of a blood clot (thrombus) within a blood vessel, which can obstruct blood flow and lead to serious complications such as tissue ischemia or infarction (StatPearls, 2023). It is not a single molecular target but a complex physiological process involving the activation of platelets and the coagulation cascade (NIH, 2024). The condition is traditionally categorized into venous and arterial thrombosis, each with distinct triggers and clinical presentations like deep vein thrombosis or myocardial infarction. Therapeutic strategies do not target thrombosis directly as a molecule but instead inhibit specific components like Factor Xa, thrombin, or platelet receptors to prevent clot expansion or formation. Managing thrombosis requires a careful balance between preventing pathological clots and maintaining normal hemostasis to avoid life-threatening bleeding (PubMed, 2022). Biomarkers such as D-dimer and coagulation assays are frequently used to monitor the state of the thrombotic process and the efficacy of treatment.
