Thymidine kinase (TK) is an enzyme crucial for DNA synthesis and cell division. It catalyzes the phosphorylation of thymidine to thymidine monophosphate (dTMP), a precursor for DNA polymerization. There are two main human isozymes: cytosolic TK1, which is cell cycle-dependent, and mitochondrial TK2, which functions independently of the cell cycle. Viral TKs are targets for antiviral therapies. Serum TK1 levels can serve as a proliferation marker in cancer.
