Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) is a cytosolic enzyme crucial for DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. It catalyzes the phosphorylation of thymidine to thymidine monophosphate (dTMP), an essential building block for DNA replication. TK1 operates in the DNA salvage pathway, recycling thymidine from degraded DNA or external sources back into nucleotides usable for new DNA synthesis. Elevated serum or plasma levels indicate increased cell turnover—commonly seen in cancers.
