Thymidine Phosphorylase (TP)

Target
TP
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Pentosyltransferase
01

Overview

Thymidine phosphorylase (TP), also known as TYMP, is an enzyme involved in nucleoside metabolism. It catalyzes the reversible phosphorolysis of thymidine to produce thymine and 2-deoxy-D-ribose-1-phosphate. This reaction is crucial for pyrimidine metabolism, regulation of nucleoside levels, angiogenesis, and maintenance of mitochondrial DNA. TP is overexpressed in various tumors where it contributes to angiogenesis, tumor growth, and metastasis. Deficiency in TYMP causes mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE).
