A thymocyte is a precursor T cell that resides and differentiates within the thymus before becoming a mature, functional T lymphocyte. Thymocytes originate from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow and migrate to the thymus, where they undergo a selection process—positive selection for functional recognition of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, and negative selection to eliminate self-reactive cells. This process ensures the output of naïve T cells capable of adaptive immune responses while minimizing autoimmunity. Thymocytes are not proteins, receptors, or drug targets themselves, but their developmental processes are critical for immune function, and dysfunctional selection or maturation can contribute to diseases such as immunodeficiency or autoimmunity.
