Overview

Thymosin beta-15B is a small, non-enzymatic, actin-binding protein encoded by the TMSB15B gene in humans. It belongs to the beta-thymosin family and plays an essential role in organizing the cytoskeleton by binding and sequestering G-actin monomers, thus inhibiting actin polymerization[1][2][3]. This function is crucial for cell motility, migration, angiogenesis, and wound healing. In the thymus, thymosin beta-15B is secreted by thymic epithelial cells and regulates their spatial development and differentiation, influencing thymocyte maturation and thymic output. While it is functionally identical in protein sequence to Thymosin beta-15A, these two proteins are independently regulated at the gene level[3]. Thymosin beta-15B is associated with the regulation of immune cell development and may play a role in pathological processes, such as tumor metastasis, certain immune disorders, and aging of the immune system, but it is not currently considered a classical drug target or receptor[1][2].
