The thymus is a specialized primary lymphoid organ located in the mediastinum of the chest, just above the heart and behind the sternum. Its principal function is to mediate the maturation, differentiation, and selection of T lymphocytes (T cells), a critical process for adaptive immune capability. The thymus is especially active during neonatal and pre-adolescent periods but involutes after puberty, eventually becoming replaced mostly by adipose tissue in adults. Thymic epithelial cells produce hormones such as thymosin, thymulin, and thymopoietin, which regulate T cell development and, to some extent, other aspects of immune aging and function. Pathological conditions affecting the thymus include thymoma, thymic carcinoma, and thymic hyperactivity or atrophy. The thymus itself is not a molecular target for drugs; rather, it is a complex organ, and while drugs may act on cells that originate from or develop within the thymus (such as T cells), there are no drugs that specifically target the thymus as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or similar therapeutic target[1][2][3][4][5][6].
