Thymus Gland

Molecular classification
Primary Lymphoid Organ, Endocrine Gland
01

Overview

The thymus gland is a specialized primary lymphoid organ essential for T cell development and maturation. It facilitates T cell maturation through positive and negative selection and produces hormones like thymosin, thymulin, and thymopoietin. After puberty, the thymus undergoes involution, potentially impairing immune responses. It plays a role in autoimmunity and can be the site of tumors (thymomas).
