Thyroglobulin antibodies are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target thyroglobulin, a large glycoprotein essential for the synthesis and storage of thyroid hormones within the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. The presence of these antibodies is most commonly associated with autoimmune disorders affecting the thyroid, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. They are detected in approximately 10% of healthy individuals but are more prevalent in those with autoimmune conditions. Clinically, measurement of thyroglobulin antibodies is used to help diagnose autoimmune causes of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism and to monitor patients treated for differentiated (papillary or follicular) thyroid cancer; their presence can complicate interpretation of serum thyroglobulin levels due to assay interference. These antibodies themselves are not therapeutic targets but serve as important biomarkers in clinical practice.
