Overview

Thyroid function refers to the complex physiological processes and regulatory feedback loops of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis that manage the production and action of thyroid hormones. While often discussed as a single entity in clinical settings, it is not a specific molecular target but rather a system involving various receptors (e.g., Thyrotropin receptor, Thyroid hormone receptors alpha and beta), enzymes (e.g., Thyroid peroxidase, Deiodinases), and transporters (e.g., Monocarboxylate transporter 8). These components collectively regulate the basal metabolic rate, heat production, and the growth and maturation of tissues, particularly the central nervous system and bone. Pathological deviations in thyroid function result in hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, often driven by autoimmune dysfunction or iodine deficiency. Pharmacological intervention focuses on either replacing deficient hormones or inhibiting overactive biosynthetic pathways to restore euthyroidism.
