The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located in the neck that produces thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), which regulate metabolism, and calcitonin, which regulates blood calcium levels. Disorders of the thyroid gland include hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, goitre, nodules, and cancer.
Drugs either replace deficient thyroid hormones (levothyroxine), inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis (methimazole, propylthiouracil), or destroy thyroid tissue (radioactive iodine).
