Overview

The thyroid hormone receptor (TR) is a nuclear receptor that mediates the effects of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by regulating gene expression. It plays a crucial role in development, growth, and metabolism. TRs exist as different isoforms (TRα1, TRα2, TRβ1, and TRβ2) encoded by two genes (THRA and THRB). TRs bind to specific DNA sequences called thyroid hormone response elements (TREs) and, upon ligand binding, recruit coactivators to activate transcription. Dysregulation of TR function is implicated in various diseases.
