Overview

Thyroid hormone receptor alpha (TRα), also known as nuclear receptor subfamily 1, group A, member 1 (NR1A1), is a nuclear hormone receptor that functions as a high-affinity receptor for thyroid hormones, especially triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). It regulates gene expression by binding to DNA and recruiting coactivators or corepressors depending on ligand binding. Key roles include regulation of metabolism, heart rate, and developmental transitions. Mutations in *THRA* can cause nongoitrous congenital hypothyroidism type 6.
